Based on Tim Entwhistle’s 2014 book,   I’m trying to get southern Australia to adopt Sprinter and Sprummer as replacements for Winter and Spring.

Northern Australia can take on the more detailed and informative indigenous nomenclature for their seasons...or simply continue with the current vernacular, Dry and Wet.

To be fair we in the U.K. used to call it fall as well as Autumn (also harvest).

While Autumn comes from way back so does fall, though the association of fall with a period in the U.K. calendar came out from a poetic term ‘fall of the year’ referring to the leaves being shortened to fall.

Just as America had early on, some areas of the U.S. favoured Autumn while others favoured fall, allegedly the north U.S. but fall eventually won out in the U.S.

It is said w e stopped calling it fall in favour of Autumn because the U.S. favoured fall. But fall was already dropp ing out of favour in the U.K.

So essentially we both used the same words, but one won out in the U.S. while the other won in the U.S.

Just as the U.S. doesn’t use imperial but uses the earlier form of imperial now known as U.S. Customary Units. The U.K. changed the units of imperial, shortly after U.S. independence in 1824 , weights and measures which is why a U.S. gallon is different to a U.K. gallon, why a British pint is larger than a U.S. pint, etc...

Er, the U.S. calls it the hood for pretty much the same reason the British call it the bonnet which both come from headwear . The British adopting the female form of headwear from the French of which the French word for car is feminine while the U.S. adopted the more gender neutral form of headwear and uses hood.

I did look up Dr. John McLean. He’s an Architect. His report is basically complaining about HadCRUT4, however, on the SR15 report they acknowledge a margin of error and also use standard deviation to rid themselves from outliers (and it’d be odd for climate scientists not to remove the outliers Dr. McLean infers in his Thesis).

Additionally, SR15 uses various sources for their climate figures, those aren’t limited to HadCRUT4.

I also started looking at the original report he published in 2017 for free from the JCU site. Robert Boyle Publishing doesn’t seem very legit given that their store is limited to one item only.

Furthermore, no legitimized news paper or site has covered these alegations at the time I write this , the closest one to “mass media” might be Breitbart...which given previous publications, I do not consider objective or trustworthy.

So in the end the IPCC could’ve made a mistake and this researcher could’ve uncovered something bad... but the SR15 covers it’s ass pretty well too, so it’s up to research journalists with more time than I do to figure it out. But.... Good catch!

I don’t get the U.S. excuse of, ‘it comes from the name association football’. ? Association football or football association means i t’s an association of football.

You don’t shorten United States of America to United and Great Britain to Great. United being that the states of America are united and Great as in l arge Britain believed to come from either the name given to differentiate itself to other from Bretagne in France or as some believe that Ireland was referred to as the little Britain of the larger Britain.

We have an amalgamation of languages that have converged over the years.

Take Torpenhow Hill here in Cumbria, which is a quadruple tautology

As

Tor , Anglo-Saxon for hill,

pen, which means head, peak or hill,

how, which comes from the Danish haugr meaning hill

and hill which makes it hillhillhill hill.

Kinja'd!!!1

The thing about science is that... it’s open to nuance to an extent because of how scientists talk. Nothing in the scientific world is absolute... and journalists want to abuse that at times.

The real question is how nuanced a report can be. I feel that people sometimes abuse of the initial lack of precision for figures that can be hard to obtain. Like climate data in countries with little political stability. Inferences can be made (and are in many reports) but just because these are educated estimations it doesn't mean it's wrong. So I can credit someone who pokes holes in the SR15 report... I just wonder how porous those holes are.

So... I’m honestly inclined to believe in the IPCC since I get to experience the microchasm of climate change every day here in the Mexican Valley. When there’s more pollution and less air to move it about ITS FUCKING HOTTER. This year we experienced fewer climate emergencies here but in 2017... jesus... it was a fucking nightmare.

Hahahaha hillhillhill hill is amazing.

I read that Soccer came from Association Soccer. Then apparently it got shortened to a-socc. Then the english commoners called it Socc-ah. Then us americans used the accent of the ah and turned it into an er - Soccer.

It does makes sense in the way that GB is referred to as Britain, and USA as America though...

The most common reason to come from modern day Americans is soccer coming from the association bit, which just sounds incorrect.

We have others.

Seamer Water, water means lake in modern English, Mer is mere from Middle English and means lake and sea (originally sae) means lake, so Seamer Water means lake lake lake, even though there isn’t the word lake in the modern name.

Sahara Dessert means Dessert dessert.

Rock of Gibraltar means Rock rock of Tariq.

There have been attempts by some to debunk the hill hill hill hill, trying to say it means hill peak hill hill but what they fail to mention is Torpenhow is not the original Torpenhow that sat at the top of the hill but that it had moved down the hillside from it’s peak over time as settlements do . Also in the fashion you mentioned earlier Torpenhow is not pronounced the way it looks but is pronounced locally as tra -pen-ar.
